Admission

Outstanding (top 10%) students with a university degree (bachelor or master) in economics or related fields, such as mathematics, statistics, business administration, accounting, and finance, are encouraged to apply for admission to the BGSE.

The application deadline for the program starting in October is April 30 of the resp. year (e.g. April 30, 2012 for the program starting in October 2012).

To submit your application, be prepared to have the following documents ready as pdfs for uploading:
  • a letter of motivation,
  • a short curriculum vitae,
  • academic transcripts (transcript of record, university degree/s)*,
  • GRE score report (General Test Format)**,
  • additionally, a TOEFL or IELTS score report is required if English is not your first language or if the language of instruction of your previous degree is not English (curriculum must have been taught exclusively in English).**
* If you have not yet completed your university degree but will do so before the BGSE program starts, you are of course also invited to apply. In that case, you will be asked during the online application process to enter the relevant information about your current studies.

** You are asked to upload pdfs of the TOEFL or IELTS and the GRE score reports with the online application. Alternatively, you can instruct Educational Testing Service (ETS) to send the score reports directly to the BGSE. The ETS code number of the BGSE is 1359.
  • Furthermore, you need to ask two of your academic teachers to send a confidential letter of recommendation (formless) to the BGSE. Professors can send their recommendation as an email attachment to info.bgse@uni-bonn.de. References sent via email must
    - have an official letter head from the university,
    - be signed by the referee personally,
    - be attached as a pdf to the email, and
    - be sent from the professor’s official university’s email account.
    Alternatively, professors can choose to send the recommendation letter by regular mail to

Applicants will learn the decision of the admission committee by May 31.

Applicants who present a detailed and adequate offer by another doctoral program may ask the BGSE to reach a decision outside the deadlines.
